After getting home from my Greek adventure I was doing laundry and I get a phone call. I get phone calls all the time but this one was very interesting. The story was that this family had booked a private charter holiday and that their skipper had been in an accident and couldn’t sail them. Via some of my contacts they got my number and called me to ask if I had time to come to Croatia. They insisted as they really wanted a dutch speaking skipper. So I got the number of their skipper and had a good phone call and decided to go for it.
So July20th I hopped into a plane to Zadar and the family picked me up at the airport. We went to the marina and checked-in on the boat and immediately left the dock to have an awesome week of sailing.
It was fun to get to know this family and teach them everything they wanted. They didn’t have sailing experience but by the end of the week they were sailing confidently. It was amazing!
After this week I went to a different marina as there were was another booking I could take over for the skipper. New family, different vibe. They told me they had lots of experience sailing which should make my life easier right? Nope, it made it worse. They didn’t have a whole lot of experience but they thought they had so we had some interesting moments on the boat. During the week I got to meet up with my friends Yvan and Sandi which was good fun!
The guests had a fun week and learned some things and had a good time as we ticked off all their wishlist items but I was happy to get back on the plane home.
So that was my short but fun Croatia adventure. My thoughts? Well I’ve been to Croatia a couple of years back. And I’m shocked the prices are sky-high on everything: Don’t be surprised for 50 euros per night on a mooring buoy in a bay that has nothing or 150 euro’s a night in a marina.
So I’d happily sail there again, but not on my own money. Anyone need a private charter skipper? 😉
